Leaders of many of the public sector organisations in Cumbria are behind an ambitious plan to gain a degree of devolution for the area. This would give them more control of how services are organised and financed in the local region, rather than relying on the support of the government. The proposals, if successful, could help to generate more public sector jobs in Cumbria.
The group of leaders is made up of 14 members who represent the majority of the public sector organisations in the county. It includes all the leaders of the seven main councils, as well as the parish councils, the police and the Lake District National Park Authority. They all want to provide benefits for the county by taking control of the local economy and public services.
They have put forward a bid to government ministers which they hope will secure them a deal for devolution. Analysis of the proposals shows that it could provide a £1.3 billion boost to the local economy. It will also lead to the creation of up to 30,000 vacancies, including public sector jobs in Cumbria, before 2024.
The ideas put forward in the group’s bid include:
– Merging the local emergency services
– A government buyout for the private finance deal in place at Cumberland Infirmary
– More integration amongst health and social care facilities
– Planning regulations relaxed
– More freedom to enable local housing problems to be tackled
– Gaining 100% mobile coverage in the county before 2017
No date is yet in place for an agreement on the deal, but it is hoped that this could be finalised before the Autumn Statement is made by the Chancellor.
The Cumbria Deal, as it has become known, would bring about enormous benefits for the area. It would lead to improvements in infrastructure, security for public sector jobs in Cumbria and the provision of enhanced services.
